Arcadia - JCU Banner
A friendly world-class campus located in an environmental wonderland

If the natural environment is what attracts you to study abroad in Australia then you should consider James Cook University (JCU). The unique location of JCU allows for world-class studies in marine biology, biodiversity, tropical environmental studies, earth sciences, tropical health, and tourism. JCU is consistently ranked in the world’s top three for research performance in the areas of ecology and environment, plant and animal sciences, and geosciences, and is ranked among the top 12 tourism education institutions in the world with its special focus on ecotourism.

As a comprehensive university, you'll find that there are also plenty of other courses available covering topics such as indigenous peoples and sociology, rural education issues, business and economics, and engineering related to tropical climates.

  • With its campus in tropical north Queensland, in Townsville, JCU uses its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, tropical rainforests, arid outback Queensland and indigenous communities to create an innovative and inspiring academic community.

  • JCU has a strong international services office with pastoral care and a fabulous orientation and welcome session.

Excursions & Activities

With Arcadia, you learn beyond the classroom. Travel to fascinating places of interest that enhance your cultural immersion and give a meaningful context to your academic courses, through Arcadia's planned excursions and activities. Arcadia Australia offers a wonderful array of excursions and activities impacted by the location of your program to bring you unique experiences. These excursions and activities range from urban locations, coastal regions, rural bushlands, rainforests, and tropical islands. They provide you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture, environment, traditions, and with the people of these places. You will try new foods, learn new skills, explore incredible places, and learn about the Indigenous peoples of Australia.

Our staff will help you look beneath the surface of everyday life and begin to understand what it means to be Australian. While we encourage you to engage with the culture through your course options, there’s also a world of learning beyond the classroom. All Arcadia excursions are designed to be fun and interactive learning opportunities. We’ll open the doors, but it’s up to you to grasp the opportunity and enjoy a life-changing experience. Academic Program
Students may choose from a rich array of courses in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology, specifically within the School of Marine and Tropical Biology or the School of Earth and Environment Sciences. Students may take courses from more than one department within a School, and should pay careful attention to prerequisites when selecting courses. Pomona also requires students to take one course focusing on Australian culture in an area such as literature, history, sociology, or anthropology.

Students enroll in a full credit load of 16 U.S. semester credits at JCU in order to earn 4.0 Pomona credits. Refer to Arcadia’s credit translation scale to determine the equivalences between James Cook University credits and U.S. semester credits. Students primarily enroll in courses in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology, the School of Marine and Tropical Biology, and the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Pomona students are required to take one course with significant focus on Australia. Students should note that only whole-letter grades are available.
