Program Description:
florenceThere is no limit to the treasures of the city of Florence, which many art lovers consider the most hallowed on earth. Situated along the banks of the Arno river and set among the cypress-clad low hills of Tuscany, this small and intimate city possesses an overwhelming density of cultural and artistic experiences. Cradle of the Renaissance and home of Dante, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, and the Medici, Florence has entranced intellectuals for centuries. Today, it continues to play a major role in Italian culture, art, literature, and politics.

The program, sponsored by Syracuse University, is located on the Piazza Savonarola, a beautiful 19th-century piazza and neighborhood in the northern section of Florence, only a ten minute walk from downtown. In addition to classroom instruction, the program includes a variety of field trips.

Academic Program
Syracuse University offers three program options in Florence:

SU Florence Center offers students the opportunity to take courses at the Syracuse University (SU) Florence Center. The academic program includes a required intermediate or advanced Italian language course and an optional language practicum companion course.

Students enroll in electives taught in English by local and visiting faculty. Students take 12-19 SU credits to equal 3-4.75 Pomona credits.

Students enrolled on this option may choose to follow the studio arts track.

Studio Arts track: This track offers courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital photography, and antique painting techniques (fresco and egg tempera) on the Syracuse Abroad Florence campus, as well as metalsmithing, batik, silkscreen, and weaving at Fuji Studios located in the city center. Students enroll in two or three studio art classes, Italian language, and one elective course focused on Italy at the Syracuse Center. Applicants are required to submit an art portfolio as part of the application. Students take a total of 15 SU credits, equaling 4.0 Pomona credits (for fall 2022 and spring 2023) or 12-19 SU credits to equal 3-4.75 Pomona credits (for fall 2023 onwards).

Intensive Language Program at the University of Florence offers an intensive language and culture program at the Centro di Cultura per Straniere of the University of Florence. The Italian language class (intermediate or advanced) includes an advanced practicum. Students complete the required course load by taking courses taught in English or Italian at the SU Center or the University of Florence for a total enrollment of 15 SU credits, equaling 4.0 Pomona credits (for fall 2022 and spring 2023) or 12-19 SU credits to equal 3-4.75 Pomona credits (for fall 2023 onwards).

Direct Enrollment at the University of Florence offers students the opportunity to directly enroll in up to three Italian-taught courses at the University of Florence. Students also take at least one course at the SU center to earn a total of at least 15 semester credits, to equal 4.0 Pomona credits (for fall 2022 and spring 2023) or 12-19 SU credits to equal 3-4.75 Pomona credits (for fall 2023 onwards).

Students can elect to do an internship and enroll in the internship seminar as one of their elective courses. There is an additional form as part of the application for students who are interested in an internship.

Pomona does not award credit for the Mapping Italy orientation course. Pomona does not award semester credit for Signature Seminars, prior to or following the academic semester. Students choosing to participate in these optional study tours before or after their semester will be responsible for the additional cost of the seminar.

Students may take only one course taught by the Syracuse study center on a CR/NC basis.

Living Arrangements
Students are placed in Italian homes or apartments. Homestays provide breakfast seven days per week and five evening meals per week. Pomona provides an allowance for weekday lunches and evening meals on weekend days. Students placed in apartments receive an allowance from Syracuse to partially cover meal expenses, and Pomona provides a supplement.

Pomona College will cover the standard housing options of a homestay or apartment. However, there are two additional housing options available to students with supplemental fees: The Student Hotel (residence hall) and Camplus (residence hall). Syracuse will bill students directly for supplemental housing fees if students select housing that has an additional fee. Please select housing options that fit within your budget.
