Program Description:
MBLThe Semester in Environmental Science is a fall semester program at the Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. It offers an intensive field and laboratory-based curriculum where students can deepen their knowledge about global change and the complex feedbacks and unexpected consequences of human impacts on the planet, gain experience in field and lab research, and connect with the world-class Woods Hole scientific community.

Academic program:
The MBL offers a full semester curriculum emphasizing inquiry-based learning through student participation in laboratory and research projects. Completion of two core laboratory and lecture courses (1 Pomona credit each) and an elective course (.75 Pomona credit) will be required. As part of the core course, students will also participate in a weekly capstone synthesis discussion. Students will also be expected to conduct an independent research project (1 Pomona credit), participate in a Science Writing Seminar (.25 Pomona credit), and attend a seminar featuring prominent outside speakers. At the end of the semester the Marine Biological Laboratory will issue a certificate of completion, and course credit and grades will count towards the Pomona College GPA.

Students enroll in 16 MBL semester credits to earn 4.0 Pomona credits.

There is no CR/NC option on this program.

Living Arrangements:
Students live in apartments or dorms at the Marine Biological Laboratory. MBL provides students with three meals per day during the week and brunch and dinner on weekends.

Number of Students:
Total program size is 24 students from various institutions. A maximum of five Pomona College students may enroll in the same semester.

Eligibility:
Students must have completed appropriate background coursework in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics.

Cost:
Pomona College Tuition + Room and Board

This fee covers program tuition, room and board.

Students receiving financial aid may also be eligible for financial assistance, if needed, for a travel allowance, which is a contribution towards the cost of round-trip flight, train, or bus transportation from the student's home city to the program site.
